Bungort

Basket Sedge

Carex tereticaulis

Bungort is a sedge which grows from 0.4 to 1.2 metres tall with long green leaves and a flowering stalk which has spike-like orange-brown flowers from August to November.

The Wurundjeri-woiwurrung used the plant for its leaves, which when green can be turned into string used to make baskets.

It grows in moist heavy soil in full sun to semi shade.
